T. Don Hutto is a former prison that is privately run for profit by the Corrections Corporation of America. This prison is now used as a “Family Detention Center” and houses upwards of 400 individuals who are primarily political asylum seekers in the U.S.. Many of these individuals are children from 5 months of age up.

“It is perhaps fitting that I am applying for asylum here. The Nürnburg trials established that a person cannot defend his or her actions by explaining that they had simply been following orders. If I had stayed in the U.S. Army and continued to participate in the atrocities caused by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I could not argue that I was just doing my job. It is here in Germany that the law was established that everyone, even a soldier, must take responsibility for their actions, no matter how many superiors are giving orders.

There have been many Germans who have called the war in Iraq illegal and immoral. It would be logical to suggest then that soldiers participating in these wars are also doing something illegal and immoral. It is inconceivable of me to participate in the wanton destruction of life and property for the good of a few.”

“Es passt vielleicht, dass ich gerade in Deutschland Asyl beantrage, dem Land, in dem vor 60 Jahren die Nürnberger Prozesse begannen. Eines der wichtigsten Prinzipien, auf die diese Verfahren sich stützten, war, dass niemand sein Handeln damit rechtfertigen kann, er habe lediglich Befehle befolgt. Wenn ich in der US-Armee geblieben wäre und weiter an den Kriegen in Irak und Afghanistan teilgenommen hätte, könnte ich nicht rechtmäßig argumentieren, ich hätte nur meinen Job gemacht. Hier in Deutschland wurde festgestellt, dass jede und jeder, auch eine Soldatin oder ein Soldat, die Verantwortung für ihre und seine Handlungen übernehmen muss, ganz gleich, wie viele Vorgesetzte die Befehle dazu gegeben haben.

Es gibt viele Deutsche, die die Kriege im Irak und in Afghanistan rechtswidrig und unmoralisch nennen. Es ist nur logisch, daraus zu folgern, dass die an diesen Kriegen beteiligten Soldaten ebenfalls rechtswidrig und unmoralisch handeln. Die Frage ist nun, ob Deutschland den Soldatinnen und Soldaten, die sich diesen Kriegen verweigern, zur Seite stehen und Asyl gewähren wird.”

Heres the latest update on the Honduran political crisis. Ousted leader Manual Zelaya remains in the Brazilian embassy since he rejected an offer for political asylum in Mexico.

Police in riot gear continue to stand guard outside the Brazilian Embassy in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.

Despite announcements that he would depart for Mexico imminently, deposed leader Manuel Zelaya remains holed up there.

Negotiations over Zelaya’s safe exit out of Honduras broke down because Zelaya says he will go to Mexico as a guest but won’t accept political asylum. That would jeopardize his future plans of returning to Honduras and to the office of President, he says.

Political opponents engineered Zelaya’s ouster from office in June, sparking Central America’s worst political crisis since the Cold War.

Zelaya later sneaked back into Honduras to take refuge in the Brazilian Embassy, from which he has conducted a campaign for his return to power.

But Zelaya suffered a serious blow last week when the Honduran Congress decided he could not take office again.

As Hondurans wait for the next twist in this saga, Zelaya supporters also remain outside the Brazilian embassy- chanting their support for the ousted leader.

Another great song by Edinburgh’s political Asylum. The first song on side 2 of the “Winter” EP, providing ample evidence of the depth of Political Asylum’s work. Posted to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first Whitecross Rock Festival in April 1984, Political Asylum were the headline act at 1986’s festival.
If anyone has got a better recording of this (you’ll notice my this version jumps – the problem with old vinyl records), let us know & we will happily take it down.
