The Kent County Lunatic Asylum was opened in 1833 at a site on Barming Heath just outside of Maidstone.
The photos in this collection show the second asylum building (Queen’s House) as it was following the closure of the hospital and standing derelict for many years. In the late 1990s the building was converted into residential use.
The video opens by recalling the fire that occurred on Friday 29 November 1957 at 6:40am. The fire brigade were called and had the fire under control by 7:30am. While hospital staff and the fire brigade were inspecting the damage, the central tower collapsed at about 9:50am. Tragically six people were killed.

As we were exploring the island of Ireland we came across this massive complex called St. Lomans in Mullingar, Ireland. Built in 1886 and over a half a mile in length. The compound included numerous other buildings on a vast expanse of land estimated to be hundreds of acres in size including a strange building across the west side called the “Summer Cottage”. We did go inside the main building however they were extremely strict about not allowing photography of ankind. This place is not like your typical mental hospital but something right our of Hollywood horror film. It was hard to believe these places exist. We did find out that Ireland has immense amount of places like this sponsored by the government. This was the largest. The design they call it is “Institutional Gothic”.

My family (Sarah’s) and I had taken a tour of Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, formerly known as Weston State Hospital. This is a video I created from the photos I took. It also contains little facts about the Asylum.

STANLEY ROYD
The building was necessary to care for the treatment and care of the insane poor, and work began on it in 1816. The main builders were John Robson, John Billinton and William Pockrin – all from Wakefield. Work was completed and the hospital occupied by the 23rd of November 1818. The eventual cost of the building work was £23,000 being £7,000 more than the contracted price. The total cost was shown in the records as £36,448. 4s. 9¼d.
The building stood in an area of 25 acres. For privacy the grounds were surrounded by plantation in either Wakefield or Stanley to be quiet, peaceful and secluded. It was a much needed hospital for in the early part of the 19th century very little was available by way of treatment for mental illness.
Before the opening of this asylum, sufferers were incarcerated in prisons, workhouses or in their own homes at none of which treatment was available except for purging, bleeding or mechanical restraint. Some of records of mechanical restraint make horrific reading. There was a case of a James Norris who, at Bethlem Hospital, London, was chained for several years to a vertical bar fixed to a wall, able only to slide in his chains from a sitting to a standing position. Records tell at Wakefield of a woman patient admitted from Barnsley Workhouse where she had been chained in a cell for no less than 36 years.
