What is the difference between an Asylum Seeker and a Refugee?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by admin

Here in the UK it would appear the establishment can’t tell the difference.
& the general public just have to stand by & watch as essential services, hospitals, schools & such like, are given away to all-comers, regardless of their lack of input into the system, should anyone object just call them selfish racists.

It also doesn’t pay to mention that not all asylum-seekers/immigrants/refugees mean us no harm.
For that we’re called paranoid, selfish & racist!

Who are asylum seekers and refugees?
An asylum seeker is someone who has fled their own country and applies to the government of another country for protection as a refugee.

According to the United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees (the Refugee Convention), a refugee is someone who is outside their own country and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their:

    race
    religion
    nationality
membership of a particular social group
    political opinion.
The term ‘asylum seekers’ refers to all people who apply for refugee protection, whether or not they are officially determined to be refugees.

asylum seekers are being sought by their government because of a political crime – ie freedom of speach.

    refugee’s are looking for a better life – a chance – a opportunity.

A Refugee is someone who seeks refuge in a foreign country because of war and violence, or out of fear of persecution "on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

Until a request for refuge has been accepted, the person is referred to as an asylum seeker.

An Immigrant is a person brought into a population or country from another country normally due to the lack of the skills or a shortage of workers in a certain profession in the host country, for instance.

Or in the UK bringing in voters as it’s known.

Asylum Seekers are applying to be allowed to remain for safety reasons. Refugees are those who have already been granted permission to take up residency following asylum.
