Taking in Asylum seekers and refugees in Australia?

Why should we/should not take refugees? Pros and Cons
The future for them and the country
What is your view?
Do you agree that, as a developed nation, Australia has obligations towards people seeking asylum?
What policies or ideas do you think might be helpful in this debate?

I believe that Australia should take in refugees, perhaps in even larger numbers than at present if we can cope with increased numbers, but only if they go through correct UN and Australian immigration channels and wait their turn. It’s simply not right that people can pay large sums to people smugglers to jump the queue when there are tens of thousands of people who are simply too poor or too law abiding to come illegally and who have been waiting for years in dreadful conditions in refugee camps.
