Oceanic Viking ‘asylum seekers’ already granted refugee status but left in Indonesia by Aust govt

The UNHCR needs greater support …..at least some of the 78 Sri Lankans aboard the Oceanic Viking have been in Indonesia for years and have already been granted refugee status, it seems, on the basis of the limited information available, that the UNHCR system needs more international support for placing refugees…..
‘The Australian’ has argued consistently for an increase in the numbers of refugees admitted to this country via the established resettlement process. In regional forums we should be pushing for other nations to increase their intakes, too, just as nations are being asked to be responsible global citizens on climate change. Those assessed as refugees should not have to languish for years….. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/ 0,25197,26290738-16741,00.html
INDONESIA is not a refugee ‘dumping ground’ – An Indonesian provincial governor refused Tuesday to allow an Australian customs vessel to unload 78 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers, saying Indonesia is not a “dumping ground” for refugees. Opposition to the arrival of the migrants came as Australia stressed it was not trying to push asylum-seekers back onto Indonesia, the main transit country for migrants hoping to reach Australia by boat…..
Indonesia agreed to take the Sri Lankans on humanitarian grounds after the Australian navy rescued them off the Indonesian island of Sumatra last week. But the governor of Riau Islands province, where the migrants are expected to be housed in a detention centre while their refugee claims are processed, said they were Australia’s problem….. http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900SID/ASAZ-7X8CS3?OpenDocument

In Indonesia, it is common to wait two to three years to be determined as a refugee, but with little prospect of third country resettlement, the report, by Australian lawyer and refugee advocate Jessie Taylor, says.
Less than 1 per cent of the world’s refugees were resettled in third countries in 2008….. Ms Taylor visited 11 places of detention in Indonesia in July, and interviewed 250 people. ”Beatings usually occur after escapes from detention facilities, as a ‘punishment’ of remaining detainees for the escape of others,” the report continues.
Among the 2000 people held in prisons, detention centres and compounds across the country, there are refugees once granted temporary protection in Australia, the report says. http://www.theage.com.au/national/asylum-seekers-beaten-in-indonesia-20091103-hva8.html

Isn’t it funny that …
Isn’t it funny that Australia is possibly the most multicultured country in the world and we are called racist. We are called primitive but got through the recession virtually unscathed. We are racist but everyone wants to come here. Gee, I’d love to live in a country where everyone “hates” me. Do some thinking people. Lot of Australian bashers around who I very much doubt have even been here.

ddchalmers, most of Australia is pretty much inhospitable. That comment is as smart as saying we should colonize Antarctica, plenty of room there. You obviously have a problem with Australia and make your comments without doing any research. Would like to live in the middle of a desert? Get over you hate mate, take a chill pill.

Your monkey mother …
Your monkey mother is primitive, that is painfully obvious! You and these primates think Australia is a garbage bag! NONE of these bumwipes are refugees if there had that much money to pay the smugglers! The real refugees are still in Sri Lanka. Australia have the right to check these criminals!

Australia is GREAT and JUST and beautiful with a great bunch of dudes! I hope these ungrateful “tamil tiger” never be allowed to see our shores!

Majority of Tamils …
Majority of Tamils live among Sinhalese in the south of Sri Lanka, leading normal lives. The question of genocide doesn’t arise and the real question should be whether these so called refugees are fleeing Sri Lanka or whether they want to creep into Australia. Australians are sympathetic and tolerant but should not demonstrate ignorance.

So G20 countries …
So G20 countries are not primitive, but their military-industrial complex must not be supported?
A good question to ask is, whether the G20 countries would have existed if not for this MI complex and its role in making some countries into G20 countries, & others into trash….
Primitive can have many meanings…..
Buddhist Sinhala people are the most misunderstood people. They r quiet & really don’t make much noise, unless their island or their precious Buddhist way of life is threatened.
