Why women admitted to mental asylum?

why were women admitted to mental/lunatic asylums?
are there any cases when women were admitted for stupid reasons?
what did they do?

years and years ago when these mental asylums were first introduced it was so easy to be admitted, patients had no protection from the mental health act then. lots of women were ‘put away’ for menial things like stealing a loaf of bread or getting pregnant. families played a part too, you could say that your mother sister daughter was ‘mad’ and that was it, you were locked up. it must have been horrendous for these seemingly sane people, they were housed with more serious mentally ill people in wards of up to 70patients, they would have been given large amounts of medication which added to the complete change of personality. in today’s world its much different, people are not admitted to psyche wards lightly, its a process involving doctors psychiatrists social workers and the family. thank god its changed

  2. Yeah, a lot were admitted because they got pregnant and were not married or would not do what their parents wanted. Some were disfigured at birth and so considered "mad" Some were put away for "Hysteria"

  3. Many men are also admitted to institutions too, and probably for "stupid reasons".
