A human being with a mental illness, whose behavior is out of control, must fit certain criteria to be hospitalized. S/he must be a danger to themselves or others or they must be gravely disabled ( unable to provide for their own food or shelter due to a mental disorder ). This is an acute hospitalization and people are often dischaged in 1-2 weeks. However, if they do not recover after a long period of hospitalization, they may have to go to a state hospital ( insane asylum?). Hopefully, many will be released once deemed safe to themselves and others. If one is poor, medical/ medicaid pays for it; if one has private insurance, they pay for it-or part of it-depending on policy.
