Should Australia accept Asylum seekers who arrive on boats?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

Hello!
I am currently doing an oral presentation in english class, to persuade my audience (my peers) on whether Australia should accept Asylum seekers who arrive on boats. I was just wondering if anyone knows any articles after september 30 2009 or any information for and against the choice. What are your opinions? Thank you; any help is greatly appreciated!

Asylum is a outdated and purely subjective process that can allow undesirable people first access to your country over qualified and highly needed immigrants.

Literally BILLIONS of people can file a true claim seeking asylum. Pretty much anyone in Haiti, Afghanistan, North Korea, most of the African continent, China, etc can qualify. Since the idea of asylum is humanitarian it lets the host country feel better while really doing nothing to stop abuses. Even "IF" all first world countries upped their limits for asylum by 10 times current amounts it still wouldn’t amount to more then a drop in an ocean. It is a wasted effort that could be better utilized in coercing the offending countries to treat their citizens better.

The short answer is "NO"! If a person is politically or religiously repressed in their own country there are procedures in place to apply for asylum in Australia. The UNHCR is too quick to decide a person is a refugee and our namby pamby government, (ie:public servants), are right in there supporting them. We never hear of the numbers who are sent back. (If any). If the current rate of arrivals continues, we will need to close Christmas Island and open up Tasmania as a refugee centre to hold them. "Boat People" are illegal immigrants and should be returned immediately to their home countries and the people smugglers should be treated as the criminals they are and be given huge sentences commiserate with the crime they have committed against humanity. We take 200,000 immigrants per year already, why add criminals to the list? Remember, every immigrant we take is entitled to bring all their immediate family under the Family Re-unification Program. This could potentially allow an extra 1,000,000 people per year into Australia. We already have an aging population to deal with. How are we going to support them and where are we going to put these people? There are not enough jobs for us much less the new arrivals. Our only hope is a change of government and re-introduction of strict border controls. Bear in mind that the boat people only amount to around 4% of all the applications. 96% come in on Tourist Visas and just simply stay.
