How many Asylum seekers are let in to NZ each year compared to other countries?

If you have some statistics that would be great. School essay just gathering information. Not asking you to do my project for me.

No problem, I found a paper which is exactly what you are looking for from the United Nations, it is titled "NZ Asylum Seeker Numbers Low Despite Global Increase". You can download it here http://www.unhcr.org.au/pdfs/090324asylumstatsnz.pdf
It is only a 1 page paper so don’t worry you don’t need to do much reading.

I’m assuming you have a PDF reader (http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ if you don’t) because its something that all students use.)

All this information was found through the UNHCR Statistics website at http://www.unhcr.org/statistics.html The UNHCR is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, just in case you were not aware.

This paper is about asylum seeker levels in Industrialised countries, this should give you the statistics you need to compare New Zealand to other countries which take in asylum seekers.

Then you can use for example the CIA world fact book https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/nz.html to compare population levels between various countries so you can get an idea of what percentage of population immigration makes up.

There are also some papers by human rights organisations that criticise New Zealand’s treatment of refugees.

Article 14(1) states that the right to asylum is a human right. This is a document which is ratified by New Zealand. Therefore when they are denying peoples right to asylum they are breeching their human rights.

  1. New Zealand are only allowed to bring in 750 refugees, immigrants a year. It is quite hard for them to actually get in…they have to reach a certain criteria and have to learn to speak English

  4. NZ is a very small country geographically. A good portion of the country is rural (at least 50% if not more) – mostly dairy country, sheep farm in the highlands and rugged mountains.

    NZ’s population is already 4 million. The govt cannot allow large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers into the country, because there will be no Jobs for them AND eventually no room.

    I left NZ because I could not find a decent job, and I am a citizen.
